It is almost here. More than a decade after the launch of GTA 5, Rockstar Games on Tuesday officially launched the trailer for GTA 6, which will launch in 2025 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. No other game studio can launch a one-minute, thirty-second trailer for a game a decade after its predecessor and still have so many people excited and obsessed about it. Here is what we know about GTA 6 so far.

GTA 5, which launched in 2013, has sold over 190 million units to date and is the third on the list of the best-selling video games in history, right behind Tetris and Minecraft. It received many updates since its launch and continues to be a popular game today with hundreds of thousands of people still logging in to play the game in its online multiplayer mode.

GTA 6 trailer and what we know so far

After many years of speculation, Rockstar in 2022 officially confirmed that it is developing GTA 6. In September of the same year, over 90 videos of GTA 6 gameplay leaked in what could be called the biggest video game leak in history.

But even before that leak, we already knew that the game would be set in Vice City, a fictionalised version of Miami and that there would be a playable female character with a storyline inspired by Bonnie and Clyde, the early 20th-century couple known for their criminal activity in the United States.

Vice City made its first appearance in GTA Vice City and also made another appearance in GTA Vice City stories. This is the fictional city’s first return since then. But while GTA Vice City was based in the year 1986, it looks like GTA 6 will be set in the modern day. It still remains to be seen how and whether Rockstar will reimagine iconic places from the original game, like Starfish Island and Malibu Club.

Also, if reports are to be believed, it is unlikely that the maps of GTA 6 will remain static. Rockstar might update the game with many more new locations after the game is released. There is a chance that the upcoming game will surpass GTA 5 when it comes to updates, even though the latter received many DLCs, updates and was even released multiple times.

GTA 6 gameplay

The trailer for the new game depicted many of the hallmarks of the Grand Theft Auto series — fast cars and gun violence with reckless abandon. “Grand Theft Auto VI continues our efforts to push the limits of what’s possible in highly immersive, story-driven open-world experiences. We’re thrilled to be able to share this new vision with players everywhere,” said Sam Houser, founder of Rockstar Games in a press statement.

An interesting part of the trailer is that it seems to be centred on one character — a woman called Lucia. This is a far cry from the days of GTA Vice City, which relegated women to offensive and stereotypical roles.
