For the iPhone 16 range, the Pro and Pro Max models are set to adopt the tetraprism lens system which were first introduced with the iPhone 15 Pro Max. This system significantly enhances optical zoom capabilities, allowing for clearer and more detailed images from a distance. While this is the primary upgrade for the 2024 models, it represents a crucial step in improving the camera technology across the Pro range.

Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has provided detailed insights into the future of Apple’s iPhone Pro series, focusing on the evolution of optical zoom technology from the iPhone 16 Pro in 2024 to the iPhone 19 Pro in 2027. Here’s a closer look at what to expect in the coming years.

2025: iPhone 17 Pro Max
Kuo suggests that the iPhone 17 Pro Max will see more significant advancements. The tetraprism lens system will be upgraded, improving both zoom functionality and photo quality. The current 1/3.1″ 12MP Contact Image Sensor (CIS) will be replaced by a larger 1/2.6″ 48MP CIS, offering higher resolution and better image clarity. This upgrade is expected to enhance the camera’s ability to capture fine details and improve performance in low-light conditions.

There is still uncertainty about whether this upgraded lens will also feature in the iPhone 17 Pro. However, regardless of its inclusion in the Pro model, Kuo confirms that the improved tetraprism camera will be a part of the 2026 iPhone 18 Pro.

2026: iPhone 18 Pro Range
By 2026, the iPhone 18 Pro series will integrate the advanced tetraprism lens system seen in the iPhone 17 Pro Max. This move will standardize the higher-end camera technology across the Pro models, ensuring all users can benefit from enhanced zoom and photo quality. This integration marks a critical milestone in the evolution of iPhone camera technology, making sophisticated optical zoom more accessible.

2027: iPhone 19 Pro Max
Looking ahead to 2027, Kuo forecasts another significant leap in optical zoom technology with the iPhone 19 Pro Max. Although specific details remain under wraps, Kuo anticipates a substantial upgrade that will further enhance optical zoom capabilities. Apple might explore new configurations, potentially moving away from the tetraprism lens terminology and employing more and smaller prisms for improved performance. This advancement would ensure the iPhone 19 Pro Max offers unrivalled zoom functionality, setting a new benchmark in smartphone photography.

Broader Display Enhancements

Apple’s commitment to advancing camera technology is evident in the planned upgrades for the iPhone Pro series.

In addition to camera improvements, recent rumours suggest that the iPhone 16 Pro and the regular iPhone 16 will feature bigger and brighter screens. These enhancements will provide a more immersive viewing experience, improving usability and visual clarity. Brighter displays are especially beneficial for outdoor use, where screen visibility can be challenging.

From the adoption of the tetraprism lens system in the iPhone 16 Pro range to the significant improvements forecasted for the iPhone 19 Pro Max, Apple is poised to continue setting the standard in smartphone photography. These enhancements, coupled with anticipated display improvements, underscore Apple’s dedication to innovation and delivering a superior user experience.
